Edith Coleman Obituary

Edith N. Coleman, 91, of Carrollton, formerly of Lewistown, IL, passed away peacefully at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at her daughter’s home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on February 28, 1934, in rural Astoria, IL to Fred William Plate and Grace (Adkison) Plate. Edith married James Richard “J.R.” Coleman on January 11, 1957, in Lewistown, IL.

Edith is survived by her children, Nyle (Vickie) Coleman of Canton, IL, Mardell (Shane) Donelson of Arkansas, Mark (Jacqulyn) Cobb of Moline, IL, her beloved grandchildren, Addison Donelson and Ellany Donelson, also of Arkansas, one brother, Keith Plate of Havana, IL, two sisters, Joyce Sarff of Kewanee, IL, Sheryl Trone of Peoria, IL and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred William and Grace Plate, her husband, James Richard “J.R.” Coleman, her son, Shawn Coleman, her sister, Ilene Davison, her brother, Lee Plate, and her nephew, Kurtis Plate.

Edith, or as everyone called her, Edie, was most proud of her educational achievements. After graduating Astoria High School in 1951, she went on to earn a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in education from Western Illinois University. Before her retirement, she taught elementary school, specifically third grade, for 44 years, with 30 of those years being at Porta Elementary School in Petersburg, IL. Edie loved her students and made learning a hands on and fun experience, often bringing nature into the classroom. She was nominated many times in the “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers”, a publication that recognized outstanding educators as nominated by former students. In addition to her educational degrees, Edie was also a licensed funeral home director.

Edie was a member of the Lewistown United Methodist Church. She enjoyed antiquing, thrifting and studying genealogy. She was an avid reader and gardener. She truly enjoyed helping others. Her greatest joy, however, came from spending time with the people she loved the most.

Edie was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, a loyal friend and a beloved teacher. She touched the lives of everyone who had the honor of knowing her. Her kind spirit, selflessness, warmth and generosity will be remembered forever. Edie leaves behind a legacy of love, strength and compassion that will live on in all of us.

A visitation will be held for Edith on Friday, February 27, 2026, at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria, IL from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Services will follow at 12 Noon. Interment will follow
at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lewistown, IL. Pastor Mike Henson will officiate. Memorials may be made to the National Autism Association.
